We are thrilled to unveil this new collaboration with Tin Man Art. It presents a new interpretation of one of Steadman's timeless illustrations from Alice Through the Looking Glass. It melds the cleanliness and precision of his Alice artwork with his ferocious and energetic use of ink and his ability to embrace the chaotic and accidental which makes his work feel so spontaneous and unconstrained.
Ralph Steadman had not read Alice in Wonderland before he decided to illustrate it in 1967, at the age of 31. It would leave a lasting impression as the characters from Lewis Carrol’s classic tale, morphed in Steadman’s head into the people that he saw around him in ’60’s London. So iconic and lauded was his illustrated version that in 1971 he was asked to illustrate Alice Through the Looking Glass to commemorate its 100th Anniversary by the Lewis Carrol Society.
The classic clean lines of this dynamic work from Alice Through the Looking Glass has been reproduced over the top of a discarded piece of backing paper from Ralph’s drawing bard. The backing sheet has caught random splats and blots, scribbles from pens he wanted to test and even old notes and phone numbers that have been jotted down in Steadman’s iconic handwriting. The random markings bring a wonderful tension that is in total contrast to the immaculate artwork which has been screen-printed over the top.
